Steam and Scenery: A Timeless Journey with Furry Friends on the Ffestiniog Railway
10 August 2023

We began the day with a sense of adventure, setting out on a leisurely stroll from our campsite to a nearby small farm. The path was lined with wildflowers, their colours dancing in the gentle morning breeze, and the sound of birdsong filled the air. Our footsteps were light as we made our way through the lush landscape, every step revealing more of the natural beauty that surrounded us.
As we approached the farm, we were greeted by the sight of grazing animals, content in their pastoral setting. The farm itself was a charming blend of rustic charm and functionality, with weathered wooden fences and well-tended fields. A friendly farmer waved in greeting, his face creased with a welcoming smile.
Climbing a small hillock near the farm, we reached a vantage point that offered a breathtaking view of the valley. Our campsite, now a collection of tiny dots below, was nestled in the embrace of rolling hills and verdant meadows. The valley stretched out before us, a tapestry of greens and golds, with the occasional sparkle of a distant stream.
We stood there for a while, simply taking in the view. The serenity of the scene seemed to seep into our very souls, calming our minds and filling us with a profound sense of connection to the land. The world seemed to pause, allowing us a moment to truly appreciate the beauty of nature.
Our dogs, Poppy, Lola, and Douglas, seemed to share in our contentment, exploring the area with wagging tails and curious noses. Their joy in the simple pleasures of the outdoors was a reminder of the pure delight to be found in the present moment.
Eventually, we made our way back to the campsite, our hearts filled with gratitude for the morning's experience. The walk had been more than just a physical journey; it was a reminder of the simple joys of life and the beauty that awaits when we take the time to truly see.
As we prepared for the rest of the day's adventures, including the much-anticipated train ride, we carried with us the tranquillity of the morning, a gentle reminder of the beauty that lay in both the extraordinary and the everyday.
A steam train ride from Porthmadog to Blaenau on the Ffestiniog Railway. This historic railway, established in the 1830s, will take us on a unique 3-hour adventure aboard a beautifully restored miniature train.

The Ffestiniog Railway is famous for its narrow-gauge steam engines, each one a piece of living history. As we settle into the vintage wooden carriages, we'll be transported back to a time when train travel was a luxurious affair. The craftsmanship of the 19th-century engineering will surround us, and we'll feel the connection to the rich heritage of the railway.
Our route will wind through the breathtaking landscapes of Snowdonia National Park. From our comfortable seats, we'll have the chance to marvel at majestic mountains, dense forests, and serene lakes. The journey will also take us through spiralling tunnels and over grand viaducts, adding a touch of excitement to our ride.
Onboard, we'll be attended to by friendly staff who are committed to making our trip as enjoyable as possible. We're looking forward to sampling some traditional Welsh cuisine from the dining car, all while taking in the stunning views outside our window.
The Porthmadog to Blaenau route on the Ffestiniog Railway is not just a train ride for us; it's a carefully chosen part of our journey that promises to be unforgettable. We're eagerly anticipating the opportunity to sit back, relax, and watch the world go by, fully immersed in the enchantment of this one-of-a-kind experience.
we discovered that for a mere additional £2, we could bring our furry companions along on the train ride. Without hesitation, we decided to invite Poppy, Lola, and Douglas, our beloved dogs, to share in this unique experience. Their excitement was palpable, tails wagging and eyes bright with anticipation.
As we approached the Porthmadog station, a magnificent sight greeted us. Another steam train was just departing, its powerful engine releasing plumes of steam that enveloped the platform. The atmosphere was thick with a mix of nostalgia and wonder. Passersby stopped in their tracks, children pointed, and everyone seemed to share a collective moment of admiration.
We chose the front carriage for our journey, which boasted four quaint seats arranged around a small table. The vintage design of the carriage, with its polished wood and brass fixtures, added to the charm. Poppy, Lola, and Douglas quickly found their cozy spots under the seats and in the aisle, occasionally peeking out to observe the world outside.
Having anticipated the journey, we had packed a delightful picnic for ourselves. Sandwiches, pastries, and some refreshing beverages made the trip even more enjoyable. The rhythmic chugging of the train and the gentle sway of the carriage created a soothing backdrop as we dined.
Promptly at 14:10, with the sharp sound of the whistle echoing in our ears, our train began its ascent into the heart of the Snowdonia mountains. The pace was unhurried, allowing us to fully absorb the ever-changing landscapes. Verdant valleys, rugged peaks, and sparkling streams passed by our windows, each view more breathtaking than the last.
After a serene 90-minute journey, we arrived in Blaenau. The brief stopover was a chance to stretch, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and let the dogs have a little romp. The town itself, nestled amidst the mountains, had a charm of its own, with its slate-roofed houses and friendly locals.
The return journey began at 16:00. As the train made its descent back to Porthmadog.
The entire train experience cost us £44 per person, with an additional £2 for each of our canine companions. While some might consider it a bit pricey, for us, the memories and the sheer joy of the experience made it invaluable. We learned that the Ffestiniog Railway offers several other scenic routes, and we made a mental note to explore them in the future.
Once back, hunger pangs reminded us of the day's adventures. We opted for a Chinese takeaway, a delightful contrast to the day's old-world charm. With our meal in hand, we retreated to our bell tent. The distant sound of nature, and the comfort of our temporary abode made for a perfect end to a magical day. As we nestled in, we reflected on the day's adventures, grateful for the moments shared and the memories created.
