Singapore is a FINE city
31 March 2011
Our arrival into Changi airport was very early in the morning after an over night flight from Perth with Singapore airlines. Singapore airlines has to be the best airline we have travelled with so far. From the air hostess dresses, to the lovely meal they served. So with not much sleep we got off the plane in Changi, and what an airport, very well laid out, lighting was just perfect (not horrible and glarey), the artwork fitted in and the noise level was very minimal. Not to say it it took us less than one hour from getting off the plane to getting on the MRT (local train).
So the first day in Singapore, apart from finding the heat so hot and unbearable some of the time, was fantastic very clean and easy to get around. We off loaded our bags at the Drop Inn Too hostel as check in was not until 1pm and we headed for Little India. Only to find a rich colour of Indian shops selling all manor of goods from mobiles phone, flower necklaces, and of course food. Because we had not eaten for quite sometime we settled in a small food shop and ordered Indian food for breakfast (yes Indian at 10:30 in the morning). It really filled us up and was delicious costing about £2 too, bargain. After that we found the Mongolian Embassy which was in a huge building which looked like it was straight from Gotham City.
We headed back in time to the hostel so we could check in at 1pm. As soon as we got in to our room we hit the bed and fell asleep for a good 4 hours. When we woke up we visited a Food Mall which is quite an experience. All sorts of food on offer (Asian varieties only) so much food on display and so many smells. We settled for something different each and met in the middle to eat it.
With only two full days in Singapore, our first priority was the Chinese Embassy as we had an appointment at 9am. So, no time for breakfast we hit the streets at a march. This time it was Jody’s turn to be full of cold so we didn’t make great pace! no joy there (come back in 3 months) so we decided to spend the second day wandering around the city. Visiting Parliament House and of course Raffles and after a good look around the hotel we sat down in the courtyard bar for a Singapore Sling and a Million Dollar Cocktail. it cost a grand total of over £25 but well worth it. The Long bar which is where the Singapore sling was first made was packed full of tourists and they made the Singapore Sling in large batches. So it was a good choice to choose the courtyard bar as here they made everything fresh. You never know, on our next stint in Singapore, we may be checking into a room here!
More walking around the streets and shops we ended up in the Arabian quarter which had charming and decorative buildings down the streets with shops interweaved under the buildings.
Hungry again, so back to Little India for another very cheap Indian meal.
One noticeable thing you do notice is that you get fined for almost everything, littering, eating on the MRT, spitting, chewing gum the list goes on. Which is why Singapore is such a FINE city.
The next morning we boarded our bus to Kuala Lumpur, with front seats on the top deck, big wide seats, and they can massage your back for you too. So we relaxed for our 5 hour trip though Malaysia.
