Road Trip to Melbourne
21 March 2011
Heading out of Canberra south was our choice towards the coast. However our journey was blocked when we got a few miles north of Bombala due to heavy rain. It had caused flooding in the small village and had blocked our way on the main road, and the alternative road was closed as it had had a landslide!. So after speaking to the work men at the road block we headed back towards Canberra to seek an alternative route.
Our new route took us through the Kosciuszko National Park. An 80km road which was windy and very beautiful which took us past Buffalo Mountain. We were amazed at the trees lining the hill tops as they were bare with no leaves. The only reason we could come up with was that some time ago the forest must have had a forest fire.
We found an absolutely beautiful campsite on top of a mountain and you will never guess what - they had HOT showers! we were amazed. and the whole campsite is free as it is practically their last week before they shut for winter. So we found what we thought was a good spot and Bryan went for a walk while Jody got the Fajitas going. Oh yes we know how to live it up in the sticks! After tea we went for a lovely walk around the campsite which sounds naff but it was more like going for a walk through the forest where some people were camping. It was really well laid out and you didn’t really see your camp neighbours. We really wanted to see some wombats and thought we might as it was getting dark but luck was not with us unfortunately. Still we had a nice walk by the lake!
so we headed for the showers...mmmmm! then back to the van for the night. Because we were so high up it got VERY cold and then it started to rain. And did it ever rain. We had parked under trees again - how many times have we learnt the hard way not to do that? Have you ever slept in a van under trees when the rain is falling hard? It’s like someone is banging on the roof all night so we got next to no sleep at all.
Still raining the next morning so had our hot showers then we headed off without even a cup of tea and made our way down the mountain. It wasn’t raining so hard here so we found a shelter and stopped for breakfast.
Once through the national park we entered Victoria, and as with the other boarders the scenery changed once again, this time more open lands with rolling hills. Very pretty and lots of postcard moments.
Next stop - Melbourne!
