Kama Sutra Temple
24 October 2011
We arrived at 6.30am by the over night train from Delhi. We travelled in sleeper class which is not too bad and we shared our compartment with two Indian couples who had brought along a complete banquet to eat on the train. They very generously offered to share it with us so it was a shame we had eaten before getting on the train.
You get three types of people of Indian trains, the business man who just wants to ask you questions about everything and anything, the lady that brings so much food that they can feed the whole carriage, but most come under the category of smelly, spitting, loud men. You get of them all in the trains but luckily we didn’t get any of the last type this time.
We spent the had a good long sleep when we arrived at our hotel then went and found lunch. Jody hasn’t had much of an appetite lately and thought it may be too much curry. So we found an Italian (not always wise in Asia) and it was delicious so she wolfed the lot!
Then we went for a walk around the town, buying more stuff - Bryan how much stuff do we need??? Then deciding on a liquid supper, we found a shop that sold half litre of rum for £3.
Well we had a most enjoyable evening starting with a few drinks, then we had booked to see a dancing show and the only way to get there was on the back of the hotel owner’s motorbike. All 3 of us!
Have to ever ridden 3 up tiddly? Actually, if you have it was probably because you were tiddly! The show wasn’t brilliant we have to say but the swigs from the ‘coke’ bottle we had brought along certainly made an improvement!
Back to the room on the motorbike and we finished the rum off nicely. We do have some very strange conversations when we are drunk though.
Anyway, next day the alarm was set for a 6am start but due to the rum and whisky last night the snooze button was activated quite a few times. Finally we got up at 7am. A short walk to the temples entrance, we got through security with Fred still in the bag - we were determined not to leave him at the gate this time.
There are seven temples that depict the Karma Sutra, each temple unique but similar in design. At first you notice the lovely carvings on the side of each temple. But you don't notice any sexual acts. Looking closely you then begin to notice the erotic scenes hidden and very masterfully carved and blended in with the other carvings.
Some of the carvings are more explicit than others and the main central carvings are the erotic ones.
All the temples have been lovingly restored, with some areas looking like they just did not know where the stones fit so they just built walls with all the stones they had left over.
As Jody said, she has never paid such close attention to a temple before in her life! These certainly must be the most studied temples in the world as we found ourself looking all over them for the erotic scenes in amongst the carvings.
These are great temples to visit, the grounds are quiet and kept to a lovely standard and all within easy walking distance of each other too.
