Jungle Canopy Walk

shapeimage_4 Finally Bryan got to go on the forest canopy walk. He woke at 6am as a local mini bus had a very early pickup. After just over an hour in the mini bus (why do they drive so fast when there is no hurry?) he arrived in Taman Negara. He had some breakfast on a floating restaurant then headed for the boat taxi to cross the river to the national park. There he met up with Erin and Pete from Vancouver who we had met the day before on the boat trip up the river. The three of them got in the little boat and paid their 1 RM (20p)each and crossed the river to The National Park. As soon as they landed on the other bank the temperature seemed to rise and get very humid. A short 1.5km walk through the jungle, a well trodden path, all with well signed posted signs directing you to where you needed to go, we all finally arrived at the base of the canopy walk. We paid our 5RM (£1), and climbed the short tower to the rope bridge which stretched some 50 metres across between trees. You needed to give between 5 and 10 metres between each other, otherwise the bouncing of the ropes would get out of hand. So hanging on and taking each step one at a time we all walked carefully across the rope bridge. Suddenly you look down and find that you are 50 metres off the jungle floor and getting higher. In total there are about 10 rope bridges, some which cover a huge expanse between the tree tops. The heat was extreme at the top and both Pete and Bryan were sweating buckets, so much so that it could have been raining and we would still have looked the same. The canopy walk was well worth it, it claims to be the largest in the world and it would take some beating as it took us a good 45 minutes to walk the entire length. We walked back to the start point, checked for leaches, none thank goodness as Bryan remembers thaem from Australia! Erin was disappointed as she wanted to experience the leaches herself (bizarre!). Back across the short 1 RM river crossing and time for a refreshing fresh fruit drink. Great time in the jungle, Bryan wants to come back for the 7 day jungle trek up the mountain. But that will have to wait for another day and another trip. Next stop; Kuala Lumpur - yet again...! Wau Hotel Room rating: 6/10 Location: 5/10 - out of town about 20 minute walk Staff: 9/10 - could not do any more for us Value for Money: 7/10 Other comments: very comfy bed and nice quiet area Stay again? Yes if heading back to the jungle Overall area experience: 8/10 This is just a stop over for the oldest jungle in the world, otherwise there is no reason to come here
