Don Det - 4,000 islands
11 May 2011
The following day we left Pakse and caught a bus to the 4,000 Islands. Not knowing what to expect we were quite pleasantly surprised. The River Mekong is much cleaner here too.
It didn’t take us long to find a nice room in the village for a good cheap price too.
There are lots of bars and restaurants here which seem to engulf the small village it started from. A real backpacker destination with just enough lively spirit without being too over powering. For example, when you looked out of our window at the rear, you were staring at a muddy field full of water buffalo!
There really wasn’t much to do here - we were treating it more as a place to chill and unwind. Apart from hiring bikes or a tuk tuk, or walking, there were no other ways to get around or indeed many places to go!
Donlon Guest House
Room rating: 7/10 - a palace compared to some on the island
Location: 9/10 - perfect for the ferry
Staff: 6/10 - all very young and a bit reserved
Value for Money: 7/10 - £4.50 each a night
Other comments: the worst bed we have slept on in a very long time
Stay again? not unless they get new mattresses!
Overall experience: 7/10 liked it here but we only stayed 2 nights. If it wasn’t for the dolphins the score would have been lower
