Luxembourg City
30 July 2024

Our journey through Luxembourg City began in the heart of the bustling city centre, at the tourist office square. As we stood in the vibrant plaza, surrounded by locals and fellow travellers, we were eager to explore the historical and cultural wonders of this unique city. Luxembourg City is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and picturesque landscapes, making it a perfect destination for a walking tour.
The Grand Ducal Palace
Our first stop was the Grand Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. The palace, an impressive Renaissance-style building, is located in the centre of the city, with its intricate façade and regal charm drawing the admiration of everyone who passes by. Although we couldn’t take a tour inside due to it being fully booked, the palace's grandeur was still captivating from the outside. The palace is a symbol of Luxembourg's rich history and royal heritage, and its central location made it a focal point of our walk.
Casemates du Bock
After admiring the Grand Ducal Palace, we continued our walk to one of Luxembourg's most famous landmarks, the Casemates du Bock. These ancient fortifications are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and exploring them was like stepping back in time. As we entered the castle vaults, we were immediately struck by the coolness of the air, a refreshing change from the warm summer day outside. The Casemates are a complex network of tunnels carved into the cliffs, originally constructed as a defensive fortress.
Walking through the tunnels, we marveled at the strategic design, with numerous battlements and viewing points offering stunning views of the city and the valley below. Although we were a bit disappointed that there weren’t any flyers in English to guide us on the history of the Casemates, the experience was still fascinating. We could sense the centuries of history embedded in the stone walls and tried to imagine life in the fortress during its heyday.
As we explored, we encountered some narrow, winding staircases that descended nearly five stories. The small, steep steps added a sense of adventure, leading us to hidden passages beneath the road and eventually back up to a bridge. It was a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the time, designed to protect the city while offering breathtaking views.
Views of the Old City
Leaving the cool confines of the Casemates, we walked along the top of the fortifications, which offered panoramic views of the old city nestled in the valley below. The scene was a picturesque tapestry of ancient buildings, their uniform age and style creating a harmonious blend of history and architecture. The old city's charm lay in its cohesive beauty, each structure contributing to the enchanting vista that stretched out before us.
The view of the old city was one of the highlights of our walk, as we took in the sights of cobbled streets and centuries-old houses, each with its own story to tell. The contrasting effect of the city’s modern elements with its historical core highlighted Luxembourg’s unique ability to blend the old and the new seamlessly.
Looping Back Through the City
After taking in the views, we continued our loop around the city, making our way back toward the tourist office. The walk was leisurely and allowed us to soak up the atmosphere of Luxembourg City, with its mix of historic sites and contemporary life. The streets were lined with charming cafés, boutique shops, and vibrant street art, each corner offering something new to discover.
Back at the tourist office square, Dana took the opportunity to practice her sign language. She posted a video for her fellow students, capturing the essence of our journey and sharing the experience with those back home. It was a perfect way to encapsulate the day’s adventure and connect with others through the beauty of language and travel.
A Refreshing Break
Before ending our walk, we decided to take a short detour along the Chemin de la Corniche, often referred to as "Europe's most beautiful balcony." This scenic walkway offered even more stunning views of the city and the Alzette River below. The path was lined with lush greenery and flowers, creating a tranquil escape from the urban hustle and bustle.
As the afternoon sun grew warmer, we were grateful to find a welcoming bar along the balcony walk. The bar was the perfect place to relax and refresh, offering a shady respite and a chance to recharge. We ordered a bottle of cold sparkling water and fresh orange juice, enjoying the simple pleasure of sitting back and soaking in the vibrant surroundings. The bar's atmosphere was lively yet relaxing, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the summer day.
The refreshing drinks and the cool breeze provided a welcome break, allowing us to reflect on the day's adventures and the beauty of Luxembourg City. It was the perfect ending to a memorable walk, highlighting the city's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Conclusion
Our walk through Luxembourg City was an unforgettable journey through time, offering a glimpse into the past while embracing the present. From the majestic Grand Ducal Palace to the ancient Casemates and the stunning views of the old city, each step was filled with discovery and wonder. Luxembourg's charm lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the old with the new, creating a dynamic and captivating destination.
As we packed up and prepared to continue our journey, we carried with us the memories of Luxembourg's enchanting streets and the stories they told.
