Kuala Lumpur.....again!
6 June 2011
We arrived at 3pm and had no accommodation booked.
We had a place in mind but when we got there is was a bit smelly - damp, so went on the hunt for somewhere else. There were quite a few in the same road so started with those. The best we could come up with was Hotel Mercury which had been fully refurbished in January this year so at least it was modern and clean.
Not happy though Bryan wanted to look elsewhere, so we left our bags with them and set off on foot - all over Kuala Lumpur! well it felt like it. After seeing the worst Kuala Lumpur has to offer, we realised that actually the Mercury was a good deal. So headed back stopping for dinner on the way.
The next day we spent looking for tours to the jungle and to the elephants and ended up in China Town again. We still couldn’t decide if a tour was the right thing for us so we left it and headed back to our room.
Later we went to the pictures and saw ‘X Men’ but we both thought it was a bit rubbish. Shame as we enjoyed the first few.
The next day we left our bags at the Mercury - told them we were planning to get a bus to the jungle - but Bryan didn’t feel too well so we spent the day just wandering around Kuala Lumpur. Very close to the Mercury was a capsule hotel and we thought it would be fun to try it out (and much cheaper too) so we checked in there. It was good fun and as it is only a few weeks old, everything was spotless inside. We now know what astronaughts must feel like when they are in space!
Hotel Mercury
Room rating: 7/10 clean & comfortable with a lovely modern shower room
Location: 8/10 - right behind Times Square
Staff: 7/10 - friendly enough
Value for Money: 6/10 - RM88 per night - £16 a night for 2
Other comments: noise from air-conditioning fans on the building outside meant Bryan didn’t get much sleep here
Stay again? Maybe if on a tight budget
UFO Capsule Hotel
Room rating: 3/10 plastic pod!
Location: 8/10 - 20 yards from Mercury Hotel!
Staff: 7/10 - friendly enough
Value for Money: 8/10 £5 a night each
Other comments: this was a real novelty factor as we had never slept in pods before
Stay again? Maybe. I felt like Sigourney Weaver in her capsule in Alien!
Overall city experience: 6/10 been here and done it before
