The Czech Road Trip Adventure
27 July 2024

It was a warm summer morning on Saturday, July 27th, 2024, when we left Newbury behind, our trusty camper van, Bandit, packed and ready for adventure. Our first stop was the magnificent Hever Castle, nestled in the heart of the Kent countryside. The castle, once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, stood resplendent under the bright blue sky, its ancient stones whispering tales of history. As we arrived, we were greeted by the sight of knights in armour clashing in a jousting tournament on the castle grounds. The colourful pennants fluttered in the breeze, and the sound of clashing lances added an air of excitement to the day.
After enjoying the spectacle and exploring the beautifully manicured gardens, we headed off towards Canterbury. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, we parked Bandit next to the city walls. The ancient stone fortifications seemed to hum with stories of centuries past. We spent the evening at The Henry pub, a local favourite, where we savoured a few drinks. The pub’s atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the perfect spot to unwind. Later, we ventured out for a Vietnamese dinner, where the aromatic spices and fresh flavours danced on our palates. Exhausted from the day's journey, we turned in early, falling asleep to the gentle hum of city life outside our van.
Sunday morning dawned bright and early, and we were up with the sun, ready for another day of exploration. Our first destination was the Dungeness Lifeboat Station, where we were to meet Scotty, who was undertaking a remarkable feat. Scotty was swimming from lifeboat station to lifeboat station to celebrate the RNLI's 200th birthday while supporting SwimTayka, a charity teaching children worldwide to swim. Meeting Scotty was an absolute delight; his passion for the cause was infectious. Fred and Sea Womble, our friends who joined us for this part of the journey, shared their own tales of adventure with Scotty, making for an inspiring morning by the sea.
After bidding Scotty farewell, we walked leisurely to the South Foreland Lighthouse. The path wound through wildflower meadows, offering stunning views of the English Channel. At the lighthouse, Dana decided to join a guided tour, eager to learn more about its storied past. The lighthouse, perched on the cliffs, had long guided ships safely through the treacherous waters of the Strait of Dover. Dana returned from the tour brimming with fascinating tales of shipwrecks and rescues.

As the afternoon sun began to wane, we went to a charming pub nearby, where we planned to camp for the night. The pub's cosy interior was the perfect spot to relax, and we settled in with a few drinks to watch the Olympics broadcast live from Paris. The excitement was palpable as we watched Adam Peaty compete in the 100m breaststroke final. The entire pub held its breath as he powered through the water, ultimately securing second place by a mere two-hundredths of a second. Though not a world record, it was a thrilling race and a moment of pride.
As the night drew to a close, we reflected on the adventures of the past two days. Our road trip had already been filled with unforgettable moments and new friendships. We knew that this journey through history, nature, and camaraderie was just beginning. With the Czech Republic and beyond waiting to be explored, our hearts were excited for the adventures ahead.
