Jamaica
30 March 2013

First day in Jamaica, only a 45 minute flight from Grand Cayman so by the time we were up it was time to come down again. The airport in Kingston is out on a man made island quite far from the centre. I'd already booked in to Reggae Hostel, yep back to travelling accommodation again. A taxi ride costing $32 US took me directly to the hostel with a quick stop at the ATM to pick up some Jamaican dollars, confused at taking the money from the ATM as it asks you how many $ would you like, okay it must be asking for Jamaican dollars, fingers crossed as I punched in 22,500 which I was hoping would be around £150, or would it be in UD $ and I'd end up drawing out almost £15,000. My senses told me that the ATM wouldn't let me draw out that much so it must be in Jamaican dollars. Phew it worked and I had my local currency.
The Reggae Hostel was clean, very secure, electronic security gate and a second gate to enter the building. With all high walls around the hostel you feel like you are in your own little compound, or prison I'm not to sure which one. But time would tell.
Right it's Easter weekend so everything will be close on Sunday and Easter Monday so I'd better get moving.
Jumped in to a taxi to take me directly to Bob Marley's Museum, his work house that is now converted in to a show home of everything Bob. I was a short tour about 60 minutes and very interesting how much he achieved in such a short period of time and even after his death is legend goes on.
A short walk down the road took me to Devon House, close today, the grounds and the small shops were open. And the famous I Scream which was lovely.
It started raining, very lightly, by the time I'd walked to Half Way Tree I was soaked right through. Oh well it's warm here.
The streets are very busy and lots going on from street sellers, market trailers to touts trying to get you on their bus, not sure why or where they were going. I was going to ask but I just could not understand what they were saying, it is like a different language but English hidden in the spoken word.
Short walk back to the hostel, the back streets around here are all high walls with spiked railings and I've be advised not to venture out at night by myself and to always take a taxi. The taxi drivers here make the prices up as they go taking as much advantage of the tourist as they can.
After a nap, well I have been travelling all the way from England so the receptionist thought, so I had to correct her in saying I'd only come from Grand Cayman. Feeling refreshed I order a taxi to take me to ziggie's restaurant, as recommend by the staff in the hostel, well not much of a restaurant more a locals cafe, I feel like I'm travelling again. On the wipe board was fried chicken or curry goat costing $500. I'd had enough checked for now so curried goat it was. I huge plate if curried goat with brown rice and beans with a little salad accompanied with a large cherry drink. The goat was I've I've had before very strong and over powering, with the bones left on. I ate most of it as I though I need feeding before the big Saturday night party, wherever that was going to be.
Across the road from ziggie's was a small supermarket, similar to small supermarkets in England I found they sold rum and nice rum, $1,000 for almost a litre, that's just over £6 in ukp. So Pepsi and rum I headed bak tot he hostel to relax and take my time before the big party night.
Finally after a few silly drinking games in the hostel we called a taxi to take us to a club, 1am and all 7 of us boarded the taxi which headed for the night club.
I have not got a clue as to where the driver took us but we ended up in an open air club.
Okay so being in Jamaica I did have some expectation that they danced to the music. Well the music was pumping out and the DJ was giving it is all but everyone was just standing and watching everyone else. Nobody was dancing, how bazar.
A little later a few people started dancing, they looked more like a dance group. As they were all dressed in what looked like similar clothes. They started a routine all in sync. Then others started to dance and before you knew it there was a dance off and the crowds of people circled around them. This happened most of the night which was quite entertaining. At one point three black girl took the auzi guy and started being very explicit and before he knew it he was on the floor an the three black women were running all over him with their groins.
We finally got back to our hostel t 4am and a good night was had by all.
Days two
Slow start due to the late night last night. Then took a slow walk to Emancipation Park, en-route walking down Half Way Tree road a guy came and walked along with me and we chatted for a while, whilst still walking, offering me weed. He must have walked about a mile with me, right up to the gates of Emancipation Park and then left me with his number and name of Steve, easily recognised as he wears a bright orange baseball cap.
Later that evening I ventured l, on my own, to Tracks and Records, Usan Bolts restaurant that he has opened, food was lovely, I had a 9.58 Run Punch some chicken spring roles and paste for main. All very filling. The atmosphere in the place is okay and the layout was original and relaxing. Although the price was a little expensive for Jamaica it was worth it for the experience. This place would be better suited in a major city like London or New York
What a day, and it was followed by trying out the local gathering of round table sharing and on to the local outdoor club at midnight, and yet again everyone was just standing around. Although this time a group if some twenty motorbikes, high performance motorbikes can in tot he club/car park with some having the girls on the back, sticking there arses out like something you've never seen. An hour later they all left, and that was the high light of that club. Everyone left at 2am and on the the next club just around the corner. This time it cost $500 to get in, that's Jamaican dollars. This time like before everyone just stood around but more movement but that was because our group was getting very drunk and dancing nothing from the locals. Finally at 4am the groups started dancing, it happened to be the same people as it was on Saturday night club, this time more of a group and in rhythm with each other. Then came on the girl, oh how hot where they, breath boys breath...! I can't explain what they where doing, but wow can though girls wiggle there arse and how they get in those positions I'll never know.
So the dancing finally started at 4am and it all finished at 4:30am, time for bed for me.
