Holy Royal Enfield!
15 October 2011
On our Rajasthan Road Trip, somewhere between Udaipur and Jodhpur, we came across this little story and thought it was worth re-telling.
Some time ago, on this very busy stretch of road, a motorcyclist was knocked off his bike by a lorry and killed.
The police were called to the scene and it was all very sad, and later the man’s body and his bike were removed and taken to a police station in the next town about 10km away.
Later that night, sometime after midnight, someone noticed the bike was missing. It was later found, it had reappeared all by itself back at the accident site!
Well it was removed again and another man bought the bike for his own use.
Once again, the bike magically disappeared and was found at the accident site.
This was enough for the local Hindu population who decided to keep the bike there and set up a shrine to the bike and the poor man who had been killed.
So now every lorry, bus, car that passes the shrine, stops to pay their respects and say a little prayer.
There is a flourishing little market selling things to offer at the shrine, musicians play pipes and sitars and there is a really lovely atmosphere.
Thank you to our driver Lelit Kumar because this is not in any guide book and without him, we would never have heard this sweet story.
