Our Cruise on the Anahi - day 8 - last day
18 December 2015
This morning was a very early start. The dinghies were waiting for us at 5:50am to take us to our last stop on this wonderful trip. As we set off for North Seymour Island, the sun was rising over the Anahi and it was such a beautiful sight.
We arrived at the rocks to disembark and the usual sea lion welcome party was there waiting for us. Lots of cute baby ones again too. We are so going to miss these when we leave.
A little squiggly path took us past lots of Blue Footed Boobies, Land Iguanas and many birds that were nesting. Then just a little way in we found what we were looking for; the impressive Red Throated Frigate birds. Its the males that display that wonderful red chest all puffed up when they are hoping to attract a mate during mating season, so we were here at the right time for sure as they put on a very impressive display for us.
A few had already puffed up very well as there were some male frigate birds on nests guarding chicks. They are apparently one of the few species where the male stays and tends the chick and the females go off to feed.
Our walk over we returned to the Anahi for our last breakfast, said our goodbyes to everyone as we were split into two teams - those going straight back to the airport and those heading back into Puerto Ayora to stay a while longer.
Francis (like the pope) came with us back into town and we started the arduous search for a guest house again - not helped by the torrential rain - funny that it wasn't raining on the other side of the island this morning as we walked on North Seymour but Roberto had explained this already. Puerto Ayora gets a lot of rain which is why it was settled 100s of years ago - you can rely on fresh water here as there are no rivers etc anywhere else on Galapagos. Makes sense we suppose.Well eventually we found somewhere to stay and said our farewells to Francis too.
The cruise had been a fantastic opportunity to see somewhere so completely unique and special that we shall never forget it.
But what now?
Well we still had a few days left in Galapagos. Time for another island we think....!
