Our travels through the Czech Republic wouldn’t have been complete without a visit to Plzeň, the birthplace of one of the world’s most iconic beers—Pilsner. Known as the home of Pilsner Urquell, the town of Plzeň is a mecca for beer enthusiasts, and our day spent exploring the brewery was nothing short of exhilarating.

Arrival at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery

We arrived at the Pilsner Urquell Brewery early in the day, eager to delve into the rich history and brewing traditions that have made this beer a household name. The brewery, founded in 1842, is a sprawling complex where centuries-old brewing techniques meet modern innovation. As we stepped through the gates, we could smell the distinct aroma of malt and hops in the air—a scent that immediately heightened our anticipation for the tour.

The Brewery Tour: A Step Back in Time

The tour began with a fascinating walk through the history of Pilsner Urquell. Our guide, a passionate connoisseur of beer, led us through the origins of the brewery, explaining how Josef Groll, a Bavarian brewmaster, revolutionised beer-making by developing the world’s first pale lager—Pilsner. This golden brew quickly gained popularity across Europe and set the standard for lagers worldwide.

As we moved through the brewery, we came across the massive copper brewing vats where the magic happens. These vats, still used today, are part of what gives Pilsner Urquell its unique flavour. Standing before these towering vessels, we were struck by the scale of the operation and the craftsmanship that goes into every batch of beer brewed here.

After admiring the vats, we were led to a gallery of photographs that told the story of the people behind the beer. Among the images of workers and master brewers who have contributed to Pilsner Urquell’s legacy, one portrait stood out—Lenka Straková, a master brewer at Pilsner Urquell. As one of the few women in this role in the brewing industry, Lenka has made significant contributions to maintaining the quality and tradition of the beer. Her influence is particularly notable in the careful balance of flavours that Pilsner Urquell is known for, ensuring that each batch meets the high standards that have been set over the years. Lenka’s role as a master brewer is a testament to the evolving landscape of the brewing industry, where skill and passion are valued above all else.

The Brewery’s Modern Side: The Bottling Plant

Following this journey through the history and craftsmanship behind Pilsner Urquell, we transitioned to the modern face of the brewery—the bottling plant. This state-of-the-art facility was a fascinating contrast to the traditional brewing methods we had just explored. The plant is an impressive operation, capable of filling thousands of bottles every hour with the precision and care needed to maintain the quality that Pilsner Urquell is famous for. As we watched the bottles speed along the conveyor belts, being filled, capped, and labelled, we were struck by the scale of the operation and the seamless integration of technology in bringing this historic beer to a global audience.

Exploring the Historic Cellars

After our glimpse into the modern world of brewing, we descended into the labyrinthine cellars beneath the brewery—one of the tour's highlights. These underground tunnels, stretching for miles, were once used to store and ferment the beer in large oak barrels. The cellars are cool and damp, the perfect conditions for brewing and storing beer before the advent of modern refrigeration. Walking through these historic cellars, you could almost feel the presence of generations of brewers who have perfected their craft in this very place.

The tour reached its peak when we were offered a taste of unfiltered and unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell, straight from the barrel. The beer was served in traditional mugs, still cloudy and full of rich, yeasty flavours that are typically filtered out before bottling. The taste was extraordinary—unlike any Pilsner we had ever experienced before. The unfiltered brew had a depth and complexity that was simply unforgettable.

A Double Dose for Dana

Now, I must confess, while I’m a lover of beer, I’m not the biggest drinker. So when our guide handed us our mugs of raw Pilsner, I took a few sips to savour the flavour, but soon passed the mug to Dana. She gladly took on the challenge, not letting a drop go to waste. By the time we reached the second barrel, I knew my limits and again passed my mug to Dana, who cheerfully accepted it, raising a toast to the brewers who made it all possible. Two mugs of this potent brew later, Dana was in high spirits, enjoying every moment of the experience and the rich taste of the unfiltered Pilsner.

A Perfect End to the Day

After the tour, we made our way to the brewery’s on-site pub, where we enjoyed a hearty Czech meal paired with more of their famous beer (this time filtered). The atmosphere was warm and lively, filled with fellow beer enthusiasts who had also come to pay homage to this iconic brew. Dana, still basking in the afterglow of her double tasting, was all smiles as we clinked our glasses and enjoyed the moment.

As we left the brewery, the sun was beginning to set over Plzeň, casting a golden hue over the town that matched the colour of the beer we had just enjoyed. The day had been a perfect blend of history, tradition, and of course, world-class beer. For anyone who appreciates a good brew, a visit to Plzeň is a must. It’s more than just a brewery tour—it’s a pilgrimage to the very heart of Czech beer culture, where every sip tells a story of craftsmanship, passion, and a legacy that has stood the test of time.

And as for Dana, she left with a newfound appreciation for Pilsner Urquell—and perhaps just a little bit of a buzz.
