Skiing in Avoriaz

Each morning in Avoriaz started the same way: Dana and I bundling up and heading out for a peaceful walk with the dogs. The snow was crisp underfoot, and the air was so fresh it felt like it could wake your soul. Poppy and Lola absolutely loved bounding through the snow, while Douglas, true to form, looked a bit unsure about the whole thing. These quiet moments became one of my favourite parts of the trip—just us and the mountains before the day really began.

Settling In

I was so glad we brought our own bedding. The apartment, though practical, had that paper-thin disposable bedding that would never have kept us warm. It wasn’t the most spacious place either—two small apartments merged into one. It could technically sleep six, but let’s just say it would’ve been a cosy fit. For us, it was fine, though, and it didn’t take long to make it feel like home.

A Slow Start on the Slopes

Adam and Katja started their skiing lessons early with ESF instructor Ben. Katja wasn’t feeling her best; she had a terrible cold but still managed to push through the first day. By the second day, she was so run-down she stayed in bed. I couldn’t blame her—between the cold weather and exhaustion, sometimes you just need a break.

The first three days were snowy and overcast, which made visibility on the slopes challenging but left us with the most amazing powdery snow. Watching Adam grow more confident on his skis was such a proud moment.

Trying the Local Brews

Sunday night, Adam and I decided to check out a little bar near the apartment. We were in the mood to try something new, so we ordered a Mont Blanc green beer. I’m not sure what we expected, but it definitely wasn’t that taste. It was so unpleasant we couldn’t finish it. We gave the red beer a try next—too sweet for either of us. Adam eventually switched to Guinness, but the pint came out with a head so big it looked like someone had poured him half a beer. We couldn’t stop laughing—it was one of those silly moments that will stick with me.

A Birthday to Remember

Monday, the 24th, was a big day—Adam and Katja’s 21st birthday. The sun came out for the first time, and the mountains looked absolutely stunning. To celebrate, we booked a table at a lovely little restaurant and treated them to Raclette and fondue. Katja loved every bite, but Adam, true to form, wasn’t as impressed. The rich cheese didn’t sit well with him, and his mood soured when the staff came over singing Happy Birthday and brought out a cake. He’ll laugh about it one day, I’m sure—but at the time, he wasn’t having any of it!

Still, it was such a special evening. Sitting together, our bellies full of cheese, with the snowy mountains outside, felt like a moment to treasure.

Skiing in Perfect Conditions

With the sun out, the slopes transformed into a winter paradise. The powdery snow made for perfect skiing, and it was wonderful to see the kids enjoying themselves. Katja was still recovering but feeling better, and Adam was really getting into the swing of things. For me, just being in those mountains, surrounded by all that beauty, was enough to make me feel alive.

Looking Back

The week had only just begun, but it already felt like we’d packed in a lifetime of memories. From early morning walks with the dogs to sampling questionable beers and celebrating milestone birthdays, this trip to Avoriaz was shaping up to be something really special.

There’s something about the mountains that clears your mind and fills your heart at the same time. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the week brings.
